As tutors, college students help the kids by aiding in their studies and serving as a kind of mentor to the students in a structured environment. The tutoring programs at both schools are distinctive. At Indianola Middle School, our flagship school, tutors' main focus is to work in the classroom on all academic subjects. By working in the same classroom for the entire quarter, tutors build relationships with the students and build a system with the teacher. Indianola volunteers give at least one hour per week during the second through tenth weeks of the quarter to assist the middle school students. For flexibility, tutors select the day of the week and time on that day that they tutor from a wide range of available times. Our program at Hilliard CARES is a collaboration between Adopt-A-School and the Hilliard City Schools. In this program, tutors help young students (kindergarten through fifth grade) develop reading, math, and research skills on Saturday mornings. Tutors can pick which Saturdays they would like to volunteer, and tutoring occurs from 8:15 AM until 10:00 AM. Tutors for Adopt-A-School come from almost every facet of the university. There is no "composite tutor", as tutors are graduates and undergraduates; dorm, off-campus, and commuter students; male and female; and almost every major, from liberal arts and education to business and engineering. AAS welcomes all students of The Ohio State University to join its program. Over 150 students volunteer each quarter, and there are usually at least several tutors volunteering at a time at the schools.
